Chiavari

Chiavari, a pleasant town on the coast between Portofino and Cinque Terre, makes a good base for exploring the Italian Riviera. It is a delightful coastal town of Liguria dating from the medieval period, situated in the heart of the Gulf of Tigullio. Chiavari was an important crossroad starting from Roman age. The city name is believed to mean “valleys key” to emphasize its strategic importance of political control of the four valleys which converge on it: Aveto, Fontanabuona, Sturla and Graveglia. At the beginning of the year 1959 a proto-historic necropolis was discovered in the town, which witnesses the presence of a population, that lived in this territory 2700 years ago. Admire the historical buildings such as the Citadel, Torriglia and Rocca with its recently restored park and botanical garden, the church of S. Giovanni Battista (St.John the Baptist) in baroque stile, the cathedral, holy sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie from the neoclassic period with frescoes of the artist Luca Cambiaso and numerous canvasses dating from the 17th century and the valuable wooden sculptures in bas-relief of sculpture Maragliano.

Chiavari has many free beaches, and also several bathing establishments that are equipped with every comfort for who want to spend time on the seaside resort. The only choice is to decide the seaside you want to go to. Keep in mind that most of the bathing establishments are run by families, and therefore you will find a very friendly environment. Prices are balanced and certainly reflect the services that are offered.

Not to be missed each month the open air markets situated in the main pedestrian street: on the second weekend the "Antique Fair" and on the last weekend the "Market of flavours" dedicated to typical food specialities of Liguria and the neighbouring regions of Piemonte and Tuscany, also arts and Crafts, all presented by the producers and artisans in person.

Every morning from dawn till 1'o clock in the afternoon, in Mazzini square, takes place a daily ritual: the market of fruit and vegetables.

Chiavari Inland

is enclosed between coast and mountains: this hilly territory is made up of rural centers with farms and country side and with charming architectures of medieval villages. To move around in the valleys you can drive a car, take buses from the bus station or rent a mountainbike. You will see castles and churches immersed in an atmosphere beyond time.

The simplest way to enjoy the Riviera is by boat: it takes you from one location to another along the coast. The boarding area is in the tourist port.
